    Series: Schools

    • Arnprior & District High School-1881-1976--- 70.2 cm of textual records, 1 photo, and 2 crests. ADHS traces its roots back to 1864-1865, when Dugald C. McNab, principal of the Arnprior Public School, coached a few of his older students; the school was then called the Arnprior Grammar School.
    • Arnprior Public Schools -1878, 1883, ca. 1900, 1919, 1923, 1966, 1968. -2,5 cm of textual records and 2 photos. Series includes Canadian history exam (1933), Primary grade school book, Canada, Our Country, and news clippings on the dedication of the public school, later known as Walter Zadow School.
    • Board of Education - 1895; 1909.-0.3 cm of textual records. Series includes invoices issued to the Board for school supplies.

    Series: People

    • McNab, the Chief - 1858; 1930;1968;1970;1984 - 2 cm of textual records. Series consists of records pertaining to Archibald McNab, the last laird of the clan McNab.
    • W.H. Dr. Steele - 1906-1909; 1911; 1913 - 9 cm of textual records. Dr. Steele was an Arnprior dentist. Series consists of five day books which give name of patients, service rendered, the method of payment and costs.
    • Dr. J.H. Box - 1914-1915;ca. 1920 - 5 b&w photographs. Dr. J.H. Box was a physician in McNab Township.
    • Aboriginals - 1987-1990 - 0.3 cm of textual records and 10 photographs. Series consists of records and photos relating to the making of the movie The Silent Enemy filmed on the Gillies Bros. Limits site, near Temagami.
    • Elizabeth Burwash- 1939-0.3 cm of textual records. Series consists of study sheets and certificate.
    • Authors- 1963-1990- 17 bound books, 1 cloth bag, 0.5 cm of textual records and one 45 rpm record. Local residents have written about and published books on Arnprior and the Ottawa Valley.
    • Tennant Family- 1963- 3cm of textual records. The family history starts with Thomas Tenant ( 1755-1821) and his wife Ann Hill (1764-1840). The book may be of interest to those whose ancestors emigrated from County Carlow, Ireland, to the Ottawa Valley.
    • Carss Family{before 1962} - 0.5 cm of textual records and 1 photo. Series consists of a history of Robert Carss ( 1812 - 1889 ) written by Marion G. Rogers; a photo of Robert Carss and a newspaper excerpt ( Arnprior Chronicle, 1889)
    • Lodge Family - 1897 - 1924-1.5 cm of textual records and 1 photo. Gulielmus Lodge was a founding member of the McNab Telephone Association, established in 1910.
    • Taylor Family {before 1880} - 3 cm of textual records. Robert J. Taylor ( b 1887) was a local grocer and writer for the Arnprior Guide; he wrote about shanties and lumber camps. Series consists of news clippings.
    • McLachlin Family - {before 1977}- 5.2 cm of textual records and two oversized items. Daniel McLachlin ( 1810 - 1872 ) bought 400 acres of land at the deserted hamlet of Arnprior in 1851; his large sawmills laid the foundation for a lumbering empire that spanned several generations and greatly stimulated the community's growth. Upon Arnprior's incorporation in 1862, he was elected to the first village council. Daniel McLachlin served in the legislature of the province of Canada ( 1851 - 1854 and 1861 - 1863 ). He also represented Renfrew County in the first Dominion Parliament from 1867 - 1869.
    • Reid Family - 1885 - 1973 1 cm of textual records and o/s photo. There were three families of Reids in Arnprior ( referred to in these records ): Ronald Reid, the Reid Brothers, and A.W. Reid.
    • Riddell Family - 1902 - 1918- 151 postcards, album, o/s b&w photo. Series consists of such items as postcards from North American and European cities to members of the Riddell family; Annie L. Riddell's war time album ( 1914 - 1918 ) and other photo and text items dating before and during WWI.
    • D. A. Gillies 1890 -1967 - 14 cm of textual records and 2 b&w photos. David Armitage Gillies ( 1882-1967) president of the Gillies Lumbering firm, was considered a leader in his field in Canada and served in top executive positions in many lumber organizations. Series includes items such as marriage certificate, wedding invitation, postcards, photos, notes and sketches of the layout of The Grove, journals and notebooks.
    • McCallum Family { before 1930 ) - 0.3 cm of textual records and 12 b&w photos. Series consists of a letter ( 1919 ), supply receipts, and photos. John McCallum, Sr. was one of the Laird's "Cabinet Council of Five"
    • Hogan Family o/s items. Series includes many indenture documents from the nineteenth century. Also letters and tax statements. Eleven documents made of vellum (10) or linen (1);some have wax seals.
    • Schwabb Family - 1896 - 1912 1cm of textual records. Series contains insurance documents for properties in Arnprior and Dochart.
    • Prince of Wales Visit- 1939- 0.25 cm of textual records. Series contains personal letters and an account about the visit by the Prince of Wales to Arnprior in 1860.

    Series: History

    • Centennial - 1962; 1967 ~ 10cm of textual records, o/s item, scrapbook. In 1862, Arnprior left McNab township and was incorporated as a village; in 1892 it was incorporated as a town. Mayor R.M. Simpson officially opened the town's Centennial in 1962. In 1967, the town participated in Canada's national centennial celebrations. Series consists of records commemorating Arnprior's Centennial Celebrations
    • Arnprior General History [ before 1993 ] Series includes clippings, photos, postcards, articles, booklets, and oversized items.

    Series: Industry

    • Canadian Clothes-Pin Manufacturing Co. Ltd. 1897; 1907; 1909. 2 cm of textual records. Also known as the Clothes Pin Factory, it was located at the corner of William and Division Streets.
    • The Grist Mill ca 1950 - 0.5 cm of textual records. Four storey stone mill, built in the early 1850s by Daniel McLachlin ( corner of Daniel and Madawaska Streets). Series consists of clippings about the mill and a postcard showing the mill and bridge.
    • Water Filtration Plant 1968 - 2 cm of textual records Arnprior's water Filtration Plant opened in 1968, replacing the original system built in 1902. It was hailed as a technical first of its kind in Ontario. Series consists of clippings, news release, mayor's address, invitation and program to the official opening and a report on the plant.
    • Huyck - Kenwood Mills 1923-1924; 1968; 1997 ~ 6.5 cm of textual records and 24 photos Huyck Corporation of New York purchased a plant in Arnprior in 1918. This mill had the largest share of the Canadian felt business with exports world-wide. Series consists of clippings and public relations materials about the plant, 10 photos of the American plant in Massachusetts, 14 photos of the water tower and extensive records about the making of felt.
    • Ontario Hydro: Madawaska River Development ~ 1971 - 1975. Since 1928 Ontario hydro had been considering building a dam over the Madawaska River. In the early `1970s that plan was implemented. Series consists of a scrapbook with news clippings about this project.
    • Pfizer Co. 1955; 1970 ~ 0.3cm of textual records and one b&w photo. In 1955, Pfizer Co. ( drug manufacturers) bought 80 acres from the Herrick family and began construction of its plant which officially opened the following year. Series consists of clipping and photo.
    • Dochart Brick and Tile Works ~ 1980 ~ 0.5 cm of textual records. In 1868, William Baker opened the Dochart Brick and Tile Works in McNab Township. In subsequent sales the company was re-named and in 1980 was called the Dochart Clay Products. Series consists of an article entitled Brick Architecture in Arnprior to 1914, and a clipping showing the site as it was in 1863.
    • Gillies Bros. Ltd. ~ 1873 - 1961. 72 plans and 0.3 cm of textual records. John Gillies bought the Braeside Mill in 1872 or 1873. After completion of the CPR in 1885, Gillies Bros., Ltd. Developed Canadian and world markets for sawn lumber. By 1953, the company had leases from the Ontario and Quebec governments for 1,800 square miles of timber limits on rivers in both provinces.

    • Clippings of the 1927 wedding of Colombe Cloutier, daughter of John B. Cloutier, owner of Central Hotel, later known as the New Madawaska Hotel.

    Series: Churches

    • St. Andrew's United Church (Pakenham and Arnprior) ~ 1890; 1940; 1951 ~ 1.2 cm of textual records. Built in 1890, the church later changed its name to Grace-St. Andrew's United Church. Series consists of programs of services, 50th anniversary booklet.
    • St. John Chrysostom Church~ 1969; 1975; 1982~ 0.5 cm of textual records. Named after the Archbishop of Constantinople (A.D. 398), St. John Chrysostom Church was built in 1906, directly over the site of an older Roman Catholic church which had been destroyed by fire. Series includes 75th Anniversary and Dedication Programs and invitation and news clippings about the original church replaced by St. John Chrysostom.
    • St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church ~ 1974, 1989 ~ 0.5 cm of textual records. Congregation organized in 1889; St John's Lutheran church constructed the following year and dedicated January 18, 1891.Series includes 100th Anniversary Celebration banquet pamphlet and a publication listing church members and committees.
    • Emmanuel Anglican Church~ 1961; 1977; 1986 ~0.5 cm of textual records. Built in 1869, the Emmanuel Anglican church was founded by Rev. C.T. Denroche. Series includes a pictorial booklet 9 (1989) listing parishioners, a pamphlet on the history of the church, and a news clipping.

    Series: Hospitals

    10 cm of textual records. ~ Dr. A. H. Reid, Dr. J.A. Box, and Mr. H. A. Short were a driving force behind the hospital in Arnprior which was established in 1945. Dr. Reid , then the mayor of Arnprior, had convinced Daniel McLachlin to sell some property to the Town ( his house and surrounding parcel of land) for the purposes of a hospital.

    Series includes clippings, invitations to opening and special events, hospital statistics, history of the development of the health care facilities. Also included: journals, postcards, newsletters, and press releases.

    Series: Recreation

    • Arnprior & District Arts and Crafts Club ~ 11 cm of textual records, 4 photos, and ink stamp and stamp pad. The Arts and Crafts Club held its first meeting July 6, 1971 at Bernie Laderoute's house. Series includes scrapbook, 4 b&w photos of artists, notes about meetings, accounting book, minutes and various bills, receipts and accounts.
    • Curling Clubs ( Ladies Curling Club and Arnprior Curling Club )~ 1906 - 1966 ~ 0.5 cm of textual records. The first annual meeting of the Ladies Curling Club was held April 12, 1905. Series includes 60th Anniversary booklet of the Ladies Curling Club and the Constitution and By-laws of the Arnprior Curling Club.
    • Arnprior Golf Club ~1930; 1936/ ~ 0.2cmof textual records. Series contains one newspaper clipping on their annual banquet in 1936; an award issued to Mrs. T.S. Church for winning the "Hole-in-Two" Ladies Golf Contest in Hamilton, Ontario.
    • Arnprior Horticultural Society ~ 1937 ~ 0.5 cm of textual records. In 1930, The Arnprior horticultural Society was set up to encourage and improve horticultural theories and activities. Series contains the 1937 Annual Handbook.
    • Chats Lake Yacht Club ~ 1977; 1996 ~ 0.5 cm of textual records. The Chats lake Club in Arnprior is a boat club located on the Ottawa River. Series contains an article written and researched by R.M. Thomson.
    • Skating ~ 1935; 1966; 1978~ 0.3 cm of textual records, 4 photos. Series contains one b&w photo of North American Silver Stick, Class A, Pee Wee Hockey Champions and clipping; one colour photo of the Arnprior Legion, 1 b&w team photo, a 1978 ticket and program to the Arnprior Figure Skating Club.

    Series: Businesses

    • Clancy's Drug Store ~ 1854; 1961 0.2 cm of textual records. Series contains photocopies outlining the occupants of lot 22, Elgin Street, later occupied by Clancy's Drug Store.
    • David Craig and Sons, Ltd. ~ 1971~ 0.2 cm of textual records. David Craig & Sons, Ltd. was a mill set up in Arnprior in 1916. The mill was located along the CNR railway tracks of Meehan Street. Series contains a newspaper article.
    • Hobbs Barber Shop ~ 1924 - 1925; 1984 ~ 0.4 cm of textual records Located on John Street, Harris Hobbs ran the business from the 1940s to 1984. His father had purchased the barber shop around 1923 from Sam Pountney. The Series contains two insurance receipts and a clipping.
    • McKerrachers Store ~ 1.5 cm of textual records. J.H. McKerrachers and Sons sold china, toys, hardware and shelf borders. Series contains a receipt book and a photo clipping.
    • Scheel's Windows Limited ~ 0.2 cm of textual records. Established in 1949 by brothers Bob and Arden Scheel, the firm originally started in lumbering and the windows were an off-shoot. Series contains a clipping from a local paper.
    • Businesses, General ~ 1840; 1858; 1933 ~ 4 cm of textual records and 2 b&w photos. Some of the interesting items in this Series include: "memo-slate for Daily Kitchen Wants"; book on timber measurements (1840); a book of tables for calculating periodic payments (1858) and a rate manual used by insurance agents (1933).
    • M. Sullivan & Son, Limited ~ 1977 - 1978, o/s item. This successful, family-run construction business was founded in 1914 by Maurice Sullivan.

    Series: Cemeteries

    The bulk of the records in this Series relate the Arnprior Albert Street cemetery. The Arnprior Cemetery is the burying ground for all Protestant denominations and fraternal societies, located at the mouth of the Madawaska River. The Arnprior Plot, established in the early days of the settlement by Chief McNab, first appears in a legal document in 1847.

    • Arnprior Cemetery Committee ~ 1862 - 1920; 1972 ~ 37.7 cm of textual records. Series contains such records as: vouchers, receipts, payments, land purchase records, an article, a letter, and copies of the Index to cemetery plots, among other records too numerous to mention.
    • Other Cemeteries ~ 1972 ~ 0.3 cm of textual records. Series contains service programs of other cemeteries and a napkin for Middleville Pioneer Cemetery.

    Series: Music

    • Mac Beattie ca 1950 ~ 1 audio disc ( vinyl, 33 1/3 rpm ) ~ Born in Arnprior in 1916, Mac Beattie was a singer and performer. Series includes an album called Mr. Ottawa Valley Mac Beattie and the Ottawa Valley Melodiers
    • Ruby Ramsay Rouse ~ 1 audio disc. Born in the Ottawa Valley, Ruby Rouse played her first concert at the age of six in Almonte; at 14 she was a church organist in Ottawa. Rouse was associated with radio station CFRB in Toronto for 30 years. Series includes her album, Ruby Ramsay Rouse
    • Glasier House Song Book ~ ca 1881 ~ 2.8 cm of textual records. Series includes a leather-spine book containing address and presentation as well as music and song sheets.

    Arnprior Public Library ~ 1894- 1900; 1940 - 1960; 1964; 1987 ~ 7 cm of textual records. Established in 1895, the library originally occupied the Post Office Building. Series includes: Accession Record (1940 - 1960 ); a newspaper clipping ( March 12, 1964 ); leather-bound notebooks listing title and cost of books ( 1894 - 1900 ) ; and correspondence.
